Let’s build a Neural Network to detect facial expressions - from scratch!

This is a presentation and live demo I gave at the Northwest Insights Summit, hosted by the Northwest Chapter of The Insight’s Association.

At the time people hadn’t really understood the importance of AI for Research and Insights - this was well before the arrival of ChatGPT in the winter of 2022. So I wanted to show how these tools were relevant.

In this presentation, I build a very simple system to perform facial emotion recognition - specifically to see if a live video of me is smiling. I show how the Neural Network is built and trained.

A very simple example, but one that goes through the basics of how these systems work.
